Social Security Card & Benefits Guide — SSN Replacement, Medicare

Easy process
Quick Answer

To replace a lost Social Security card, create a free my Social Security account at ssa.gov and request a replacement online (if you live in an eligible state). Your new card arrives by mail in 10-14 days. The service is completely free.

Can you request a replacement card online?

You can request a replacement Social Security card online if all of these apply:

  • You are a US citizen age 18 or older with a US mailing address
  • You are not changing your name or other information on your card
  • You have a valid driver's license or state-issued ID from one of the 47 participating states (excludes Alaska, Minnesota, and Nevada)
  • You have not already requested 3 replacement cards this year (annual limit)

If you don't meet all these requirements, you'll need to apply in person at a Social Security office.

What you'll need

For online requests:

  • A my Social Security account (created via Login.gov or ID.me identity verification)
  • Valid driver's license or state ID from a participating state

For in-person requests:

  • Completed Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card)
  • Original proof of identity: US driver's license, state ID, or US passport (photocopies are NOT accepted)
  • Proof of US citizenship: birth certificate or US passport (if not already in SSA records)
  • If changing your name: original or certified copy of marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order

Step-by-step: Order online

1

Create a my Social Security account

Visit ssa.gov/myaccount and click "Create an Account." You'll verify your identity through Login.gov or ID.me using your driver's license and a selfie.

Tip: This account also lets you view your earnings record and estimate future benefits.
2

Request a replacement card

Once logged in, navigate to "Replacement Documents" and select "Request a Replacement Social Security Card." Answer the verification questions.

Tip: The entire process takes about 5 minutes.
3

Wait for mail delivery

Your replacement card will arrive by U.S. mail to the address SSA has on file within 10-14 business days. No need to track it — just wait for delivery.

Tip: Update your address in your account if you've recently moved.

Step-by-step: Apply in person

1

Fill out Form SS-5

Download Form SS-5 from ssa.gov or pick one up at your local Social Security office. Fill it out completely in black or blue ink.

Tip: Do NOT sign the form until you are at the SSA office with a representative present.
2

Gather original documents

Collect your original identity documents: driver's license, state ID, or passport. If changing your name, bring your marriage certificate or court order.

Tip: Make photocopies for your own records before visiting the office.
3

Visit a Social Security office

Find your nearest office at ssa.gov/locator. You can walk in during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm) or schedule an appointment online to reduce wait time.

Tip: Appointments are strongly recommended. Walk-in wait times can exceed 2 hours.
4

Submit documents and wait

An SSA representative will review your application and documents. Your documents will be returned by mail, and your new card will arrive within 10-14 days.

Tip: Ask for a receipt confirming your application was submitted.

How much does it cost?

Replacement Social Security cards are always FREE. The Social Security Administration does not charge any fee to replace your card or update your name.
