Quick Answer

To register as a voter in India, create an account at voters.eci.gov.in, fill Form 6 with your address and identity proof, and submit online. A Booth Level Officer (BLO) will verify your address in 15-30 days. Download your digital e-EPIC Voter ID card once approved.

Who can register to vote?

You can register as a voter in India if:

  • You are an Indian citizen
  • You are 18 years of age or older (or will turn 18 by the qualifying date)
  • You are ordinarily residing at your current address
  • You are not disqualified under any law (e.g., criminal convictions, unsound mind)

What documents you'll need

Step-by-step: Register as a new voter

1

Create account on Voter Portal

Visit voters.eci.gov.in and click "Register as a new voter." Create an account using your mobile number (you'll receive an OTP for verification).

Tip: Use an active mobile number — you'll receive application status updates via SMS.
2

Fill Form 6 (New Voter Registration)

Select Form 6 and fill in your personal details: name, father's/mother's name, date of birth, gender, and complete address. Choose your State, District, Assembly Constituency, and Part (polling area).

Tip: Use the "Search Your Name in Electoral Roll" feature first to confirm you're not already registered.
3

Upload documents and photo

Upload scanned copies of your age proof, address proof, and a recent passport-size photo. Ensure all files are clear and under the size limit (2MB per file).

Tip: Use your smartphone's scanner app for better quality scans than photos of documents.
4

Review and submit

Review all details carefully in the preview page. Once submitted, you'll receive an Application Reference Number (ARN). Save this number for tracking.

Tip: Take a screenshot of the ARN confirmation page.
5

Wait for BLO verification

A Booth Level Officer (BLO) will visit your address within 15-30 days to verify your residence. You or a family member should be present to show proof of residence.

Tip: Check your application status regularly at voters.eci.gov.in using your ARN.
6

Download your e-EPIC card

Once your application is approved, you can download your digital Voter ID (e-EPIC) from the portal. Your EPIC number will also be added to the electoral roll.

Tip: The physical Voter ID card may take 4-6 weeks to arrive by post, but the e-EPIC is valid immediately.

How much does it cost?

Voter registration is completely FREE. The Election Commission of India does not charge any fee for:

  • New voter registration (Form 6)
  • Corrections to existing details (Form 8)
  • Shifting of residence/constituency (Form 8A)
  • Downloading e-EPIC digital Voter ID card
  • Physical Voter ID card delivery

How to track your application status

Track your voter registration status online:

  1. Visit voters.eci.gov.in
  2. Click "Track Application Status"
  3. Enter your Application Reference Number (ARN)
  4. Enter your mobile number and captcha

Status meanings:

  • "Pending with BLO": Waiting for Booth Level Officer verification visit
  • "Pending with ERO": Electoral Registration Officer reviewing BLO report
  • "Approved": Your name is added to the electoral roll — download your e-EPIC
  • "Rejected": Application denied (you'll receive rejection reason via SMS)

How to download your e-EPIC card

1

Login to the Voter Portal

Visit voters.eci.gov.in and login to your account using your mobile number and OTP.

Tip: If you registered offline, you can still download e-EPIC if your EPIC number is in the system.
2

Navigate to e-EPIC download

Click on "Download e-EPIC" from the dashboard. Enter your EPIC number (printed on your physical Voter ID card or available in your approval SMS).

Tip: You can also download e-EPIC from the NVSP mobile app (available on Android and iOS).
3

Download and save the PDF

Your e-EPIC will be generated as a password-protected PDF. The password is your Date of Birth in DDMMYYYY format. Save this file on your phone and cloud storage.

Tip: e-EPIC is legally equivalent to the physical card and accepted as valid ID proof.
