You can identify a REAL ID by the star (★) symbol in the upper right corner of the card.

Step-by-step: Get your REAL ID
Check your state DMV website
Visit your state DMV website and look for "REAL ID" or "Get a REAL ID." Each state has slightly different requirements and procedures.
Schedule a DMV appointment
Most states require an in-person visit for REAL ID. Book your appointment online to avoid long walk-in wait times. Some states allow same-day appointments, others book weeks in advance.
Gather your documents
Collect your identity document, Social Security proof, and two residency proofs. Double-check that all documents are originals (not photocopies) and that your residency documents are dated within the last 90 days.
Visit the DMV with your documents
Bring all required documents, your current driver's license, and payment method (credit/debit card or check — cash policies vary). The DMV agent will verify your documents and take your photo.
Pay the fee and get temporary receipt
REAL ID upgrade fees range from $20-40 depending on your state. You'll receive a paper temporary license or receipt valid for 60 days while your card is being printed.
Receive your REAL ID by mail
Your new REAL ID driver's license will arrive by mail within 2-4 weeks. Look for the star (★) symbol on the front to confirm it's REAL ID compliant.
How much does it cost?
REAL ID upgrade costs vary by state:
| State Examples | REAL ID Fee | Standard License Fee |

| California | $39 | $39 (same) |
| New York | $0 upgrade | $64.50 regular renewal |
| Texas | $25 | $25 (same) |
| Florida | $48 | $48 (same) |

Renewing your driver's license
Most states allow online, mail, or in-person renewal. However, you must renew in person if you're upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time.
Online renewal (standard license only):
- Visit your state DMV website and login/create an account
- Select "Renew driver's license"
- Verify your information and pay the renewal fee
- Your new license arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks
In-person renewal (required for REAL ID):
- Follow the REAL ID steps above
- Bring your current license and required documents
- Pass vision test (eye exam at the DMV)
